Where to Stay on Kauai: The Surf Shack

  1. The Surf Shack is a dreamy 2BR/2BA condo in Princeville, on the North Shore of Kaua’i. This vacation rental ranges from $310-400 per night.
  2. Why stay at the Surf Shack? This is hands down one of the coolest places we have ever stayed. Not only is every room a feast for the eyes, the hosts have planned for the most delightful details around every corner (in every nook and cranny really). I don’t want to spoil all the surprises so I’ll just name a few of our favorite features: the creatively stocked “Thirst Aid” bar, the pre-stamped post cards, and the loaded Polaroid camera. On top of all this, right behind the condo a private paved path takes you down to the beach in five minutes.
  3. What is the parking situation like? The building where the unit is located is conveniently sandwiched between two small parking lots. We preferred to park in the second lot because the sidewalk on that side was easier to navigate with a stroller. Although, from either lot it was less than a minute walk from the car to the front door.
  4. What is the indoor layout like? When you walk through the front door you can immediately go up a short flight of stairs to the master bedroom (one king bed with an ensuite bathroom) or go down a short flight of stairs to the living room. The living room opens up to the patio, dining nook, and kitchen. The second bedroom (two twin beds with an ensuite bathroom) is attached to the living room as well. The bathrooms have similar layouts–neither have a bath tub but both have giant showers. Natural light fills the rental with ease.
  5. What is the outdoor space like? This is a second-floor unit thus the lanai is prime real estate for ocean breezes and epic sunsets. Seriously, the view of Bali Hai was just magical. The patio also overlooks a grassy area perfect for children to play on–in fact, there are many grassy lawns throughout the Pali Ke Kua property ready for running around on.
  6. Tell me about the amenities. Standard amenities include: full kitchen stocked with the basics, small BBQ, ceiling fans, washer/dryer, televisions in each room, beach supplies (towels, chairs, toys, shade), pool access, shampoo/conditioner/body wash, wifi, and charging ports. Bonus amenities include: a curated travel guide, all sorts of amazing books, board games, Roku tvs in the bedrooms, after-sun spray, sea sponges, candles, binoculars, ukuleles, and more! Last but not least, this rental has a keypad entry so you never have to worry about looking for your key…
  7. What’s within a 10-minute walk? The Pali Ke Kua Beach, Hideaways Beach, the Princeville Resort.
  8. What’s within a 10-minute drive? Princeville Center (Foodland, Lapperts Ice Cream, Magic Dragon Toy & Art Supply), Okolehao Trail, Hanalei to the North, Anini Beach, Kilauea to the South, Anaina Hou Playground.
  9. Insider advice: This rental recommends a minimum age of three and up for guests. Melibea did just fine with the stairs but she hasn’t started walking yet.
  10. Fun fact: Right behind the condo is a paved path that takes you down to Pali Ke Kua Beach. While the path is a series of steep switchbacks, you’ll be down on the sand in about five minutes. There are trees to climb, tide pools to explore, and large rocks to scale–all with the stunning backdrop of Bali Hai. Depending on the tide level, you may even be able to walk around the bend to Hideaways Beach!
