Our Top Three Rainy Day Activities on Kaua’i

Known as the Garden Island, Kaua’i certainly wouldn’t be as beautifully lush and green without lots of rain. Our wet season here lasts from about November to March, but a daily shower isn’t uncommon throughout most of the year. When the majority of trails are too muddy to hike and the beaches are too wet to enjoy we usually turn to one of the following three options listed below.

1. While we could be a little biased, one thing is for sure–Warehouse 3540 in Lawai is our go-to spot on a rainy day. This neighborhood gem is home to a handful of locally owned shops and food trucks where creativity rules. Stop in for a bite to eat, an opportunity to talk story with the makers/shop owners themselves, and to browse the pay-what-you-feel book cart.

This is a favorite for locals and visitors alike, making it a lovely place to make new friends to soak up the vibrant views with. Better yet, children are warmly welcomed here! Rain or shine, this place is a must-visit while on Kaua’i and offers a weekly Friday Market full of unique vendors. Bonus: lots of indoor seating plus covered outdoor seating, clean bathrooms, and corn hole!

2.You can continue on from Lawai and head West to Waimea Canyon where it’s typically drier. Hop around all of the lookouts or maybe even jump onto the Canyon Trail to Waipo’o Falls. The latter offers excellent views of the interior of Waimea Canyon, particularly of the clouds rolling in and out casting shadows all over the canyon floor and walls.

3.Wind back down from Waimea Canyon and head through Kekaha to our favorite beach on the island–Polihale. We’ve noticed that when it’s raining everywhere else, there’s usually at least a slice of sunshine on this beach. Not to mention, stormy weather also makes for epic rainbow chasing (and sunset) conditions!

There you have it, a simple overview of our favorite rainy day spots on Kaua’i. Last but not least, don’t feel like leaving your hotel or rental? The Lei Collective will come to you with all the fixings for a private lei po’o workshop!
