Where to stay on Kauai: The Nene Nest

The perfect yard to play in at the Nene Nest
  1. The Nene Nest is a classic plantation-style 2BR/1BA house in Kekaha, on the West Side of Kaua’i. This vacation rental averages $225 per night.
  2. Why stay at The Nene Nest? The Nene Nest facilitates a quintessential Hawaiian experience–breezy bedrooms, lanai dining, and the sweet smell (and sight) of plumeria flowers scattered across the lawn. If sunsets are your jam then there’s no better place to watch them than from the West Side. More specifically, we’ve experienced the most magical sunsets from the sandy stretch of Polihale State Park, the entrance to which is just 10 minutes from this rental. You’re also a quick 15-20 minutes away from countless hikes in Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park.
  3. What is the parking situation like? The house has its own private driveway with a covered carport. There is also plenty of street parking available.
  4. What is the indoor layout like? When you walk through the French doors at the front you step into the bright and airy living room. To the left you’ll find the bathroom and bedroom one with a king bed (and a lovely window seat housing a small collection of books below. Then straight ahead from the living room you’ll enter the galley kitchen. Bedroom two is to the right with a queen bed and the dreamiest view of the yard. Bonus: A crib and/or floor mattresses are available upon request.
  5. What is the outdoor space like? With the house set back away from the street the yard is well protected and you enter it from the cutest little maze of hibiscus hedges. The grassy lawn is perfect for running around on and there’s even a pair of loungers to relax on while the keiki play. A couple of plumeria trees grace the yard and you may even find a banana plant or two around the back. We also made good use of the outdoor shower, it was the perfect place to wash off after a day at the beach or on the trail.
  6. Tell me about the amenities. Standard amenities include: full kitchen stocked with the basics, BBQ, ceiling fans and air conditioning, washer/dryer, television with cable, beach supplies (towels, chairs, toys, shade), shampoo/conditioner/body wash, and wifi. Bonus amenities include: board games, books, skim boards, and a hip little inflatable pool for the keiki.
  7. What’s within a 10-minute walk? Kekaha Beach.
  8. What’s within a 10-20 minute drive? Waimea town, Tiki Tacos, Waimea Canyon, Koke’e State Park, the entrance to Polihale, and Hanapepe where you’ll find one of our favorite restaurants Japanese Grandma’s Cafe.
  9. Insider advice: Kekaha has one convenience store and that’s about it. Waimea offers two small grocery stores and a handful of small eateries with limited hours. Be sure to stock up on groceries in Lihue before heading West.
  10. Fun fact: The number one tour we recommend to all visitors and locals alike is the Zodiac Trip up the Napali Coast with Blue Ocean Adventures. This tour takes off from the Kikiaola Boat Harbor just a few minutes away from The Nene Nest.
