West Side Kauai Eats Under $20

Breakfast

Midnight Bear Breads in Hanapepe serves up artisan breads, pastries, and pizzas. Using organic ingredients and traditional techniques this place it what your bakery dreams are made of. Honestly they are best known for the high quality of all of their baked goods and regularly sell out at the farmers markets. I cannot live without the croissants. Some indoor seating is available though we prefer to walk across the street and enjoy our breakfast to-go next to the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge.

Lunch

Porky’s in Waimea serves up Hawaiian Style hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches. They are best known for the Number One–grilled pineapple infused pork sausage topped with slow roasted kalua pork, fresh cut pineapple, grilled onions, and Porky’s BBQ sauce all inside a toasted cheese french roll. I cannot live without the Number Three minus the kalua pork–havarti, muenster cheese, and grilled onions sandwiched between two slices of toasted cheese bread. BONUS: Porky’s moved to a brick and mortar location across from Ishihara Market with indoor seating and The Fresh Shave.

The Hungry Menehune in Kekaha serves up local style plate lunches and fusion tacos. They are best known for their Chili Pepper Chicken Plate served with rice and mac salad however they also offer a popular combo plate that includes fried pork belly as well. I cannot live without their Chili Pepper Chicken Plate and the Banh Mi Tacos come in a close second. This is a food truck at the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor with covered picnic tables nearby.

Dinner

Chipwrecked at Hanapepe Art Night serves up nachos that will change your life. All their menu items start with house fried and seasoned corn tortilla chips covered in their own special cheese sauce. They are best known for the Black Pearl–kalua pork, lilikoi BBQ sauce, crispy spam bits, jalapeño, red onion, pineapple and coleslaw. I cannot live without the Mermaid–roasted garlic, poblano peppers, onion, tomato, black beans, roasted corn, jalapeño, and cilantro topped with a poblano crema. Honestly the nachos are so delicious you may just come back for seconds in Koloa town where they are parked throughout the week (check their instagram for location details).

I love, love, love Midnight Bear bread! We go through 1-2 loaves of French sourdough each week and I can’t resist the croissants either! Will have to try the Hungry Menehe next!

All that food sounds amazing!! I was born in Hawaii and we moved when I was three because my mom wanted to be closer to her grandma, but eating the local foods is always one of my favorite things about our return trips home.
