How To  Raise Readers

Here are five questions I regularly ask myself as we raise four young readers.

1. Do I read in front of my keiki? This goes beyond books to include newspapers, manuals,  and signage around us.

2. Can keiki access books easily in each room? We like to place a basket or small shelf of books in each room.

3. Am I rotating their books enough? If they're no longer choosing books from that basket, it's time to switch it up!

4. Are there cozy places to read around the house? Get creative--even a laundry basket or cardboard box works!

5. What day works best for a weekly library visit? Let the keiki select books based on their reading abilities and interests.

- Don't limit read alouds to bedtime, reading is fun all day long!

Other Tips

- Wordless picture books are excellent for both early and experienced readers.

- Penpals and lunchbox notes encourage reading too!
