Sustainable Essentials for Pregnancy

This being my fourth pregnancy, I can confidently say what’s worked for me and what hasn’t. Overall, I believe that pregnancy and parenthood are similar when it comes to material items–less is more, quality over quantity. With that said, below I’m sharing my top picks for each trimester of pregnancy with a distinct focus on sustainable brands.

1st TRIMESTER

Body: The beginning of pregnancy always ushers in a wide variety of eczema issues for me and Earth Mama’s Eczema Cream truly saved the day. It’s made in Oregon, includes organic ingredients, and is quite affordable. More importantly, it got the job of healing my skin done without feeling sticky or heavy. *Use the code Kauailife for 20% off, expires 3/31/21.

Wellness: I went from using the Multivitamin for Women to the Prenatal Multivitamin from Ritual (and they’ve recently released a Postnatal vitamin). I love the easy subscription process plus the clean and simple ingredients. It’s also fun that they offer multivitamins for kids, teens, and men! *Use the code KAUAILIFE10 for 10% off the first three months.

And while I don’t normally get morning sickness during pregnancy I did experience some nausea throughout the first trimester which I remedied with Earth Mama’s Organic Morning Wellness Tea. It was nice to create a small morning ritual around my cup of tea and it’s USDA Certified 100% Organic by Oregon Tilth.

Wardrobe: My go-to outfit for the 1st trimester was the Helena Top and the London Linen Overalls from Hawaii-based Kepola Design House. Every made-to-order piece of theirs is designed and stitched in-house for the “conscious, intentional, and feminine female.” The heirloom quality and luxurious comfort of their clothing are really quite remarkable.

2nd TRIMESTER

Body: I’d never used a belly oil until this pregnancy and Earth Mama’s Belly Oil was the perfect foray into this realm of self-care. Similar to their teas, it helped set the stage for a soothing post-bathing ritual. It spreads on nice and light with a subtly sweet smell.

Wellness: I’ve never been a coffee person but I am definitely a tea person. Once I found Laka Matcha it was love at first sip. 1/2 a teaspoon of this green goodness frothed into one cup of macadamia nut milk with a dash of Activist Mānuka Honey = baby brewing bliss. Tastes like heaven and kicks in just the right amount of energy into my day.

Wardrobe: The rapid body changes of 2nd trimester call for comfortable support a la Bao Bei’s Adore Maternity & Nursing Bralettes. They are 100% designed and manufactured in California plus come in a rainbow of lovely hues.

And then there are the Betty Dresses from Hanako–handmade here on Kaua’i, they come in different lengths to suit your climate and are perfect for dressing up or down (with plenty of room for a growing belly).

3rd TRIMESTER

Body: Earth Mama’s Belly Butter has become my daily moisturizer. The organic herbs and oils soothe and nurture my skin, making this an easy choice for full body use. There is a slightly sweet citrus smell to it so I prefer to apply this during the daytime for a little energy and mood boost.

Wellness: Every pregnancy I’ve spent my mornings sipping on Earth Mama’s Organic Raspberry Leaf Tea and this time around is no different. I enjoy the earthy taste and occasionally choose to sweeten it with honey. Lastly, I love knowing that each cup helps tone my uterus in preparation for childbirth.

Wardrobe: Aside from bikinis, I’ve been living in vintage (made in Hawai’i) mu’umu’us inspired by the likes of Machine Machine–I focus on procuring them locally, as well as via secondhand sites such as Etsy and Poshmark.

Finally, as the weather cools down a little, I’ve turned to my Holly Jumper from Hatch. It provides the perfect amount of coverage for our tropical winter weather and is buttery soft. Better yet, it’s made in the USA!
