Kauai with Kids: Moloa’a Beach

  1. Moloa’a Beach refers to the beach nestled within Moloa’a Bay just North of Anahola.
  2. Why Moloa’a Beach? This beach has been one of our favorites since we moved to the island. The water is always a beautiful blue and the keiki love exploring along the reef and tide pools. There are many easy entry points for a young baby and a couple small rope swings for older children. It’s easy to feel like you’re on a deserted island at this beach, pack enough snacks to stay the day if you can!
  3. Where is Moloa’a Beach? To find Moloa’a Beach turn off the highway when you see the Moloa’a Sunrise Juice Bar (Koolau Road). Follow this road then veer right at the fork onto Moloa’a Road. Moloa’a beach is at the very end of Moloa’a Road.
  4. What is the parking situation like? Parking here is very tight as this is a residential neighborhood. Look for open spaces along the road and be sure to park as close as possible to the shoulder. Beach access is found at the end of the cal-du-sac.
  5. When is the best time to go? Parking can be tight and the beach usually starts getting crowded around lunchtime. We prefer to go early in the morning to start with the beach all to ourselves.
  6. What should I bring? Beach essentials–sunscreen, shade, and swim stuff. We always bring breakfast, beach toys, and floaties. There are no restrooms at this beach so plan accordingly!
  7. What food should I bring? Since we pass through Kapa’a headed here we usually pick up juice from Kauai Juice Co. and breakfast from Java Kai. The latter even has online ordering available via Instagram or their website.
  8. Insider advice: While it’s a longer trek, I suggest turning to the right when you hit the sand to set up on the South end of the beach. There’s plenty of shade, the water is typically calmer, and there’s a lot of reef to explore.
  9. Fun fact: The pilot and first episode of Gilligan’s Island were filmed on this beach!
  10. Photo ideas: The trees, rocks, and reef here all make for interesting scenery. Play around with using them to frame your photos! This is also another one of those beaches where the clouds like to put on a show, use this to your advantage.
