Kauai with Kids: Baby Beach

  1. Baby Beach refers to the small, protected cove nestled within one Poipu neighborhood.
  2. Why Baby Beach? This beach lives up to its namesake and is perfect for babies and young children alike. The water is typically both shallow and mellow, like a giant wading pool. The surrounding reef provides plenty more territory to explore and is home to a wide variety of friendly fish and other creatures. Sea turtles and monk seals have also been known to make an appearance here!
  3. Where is Baby Beach? Baby Beach is on Ho’ona Road minutes away from the main roundabout in Poipu and the Shops at Kukuiula. Look for the bright yellow pipe between the homes at 5142 and 5152 that marks public beach access.
  4. What is the parking situation like? Parking here is very tight as this is a residential neighborhood. Look for open spaces along the road and be sure to park as close as possible to the shoulder. Again, the yellow pipe marks the entrance to the beach thus it should be a quick one minute walk from your car to the sand.
  5. When is the best time to go? Honestly, this beach is great at any time of day and nearly any time of the year. We prefer the mornings as they tend to be less crowded and of course sunset is always a great option!
  6. What should I bring? Beach essentials–sunscreen, shade, and swim stuff. We always bring beach toys, floaties, and boogie boards (mostly for floating on). This can be a good place to snorkel as well.
  7. What food should I bring? Luckily, this beach is centrally located so it’s easy to grab something on the way or even pop out to pick something up. Below are a few suggestions in and around Kukui’ula Market which is a locally owned gem where you can grab basic groceries and traditional to-go items like musubi. Then right inside there’s poke from Makai Sushi or acai bowls and smoothies from Anake’s Juice Bar.
  8. Insider advice: There are no restrooms here, plan accordingly or hop over to the Shops at Kukuiula.
  9. Fun fact: There’s a similar child-friendly beach that’s even smaller and more secluded a couple minutes away from here–Keiki Cove on Lawai Road.
  10. Photo ideas: It’s all about the clouds. I love to play with framing our photos around interesting clouds here, fun formations blow in and out of this area!
